October 14th, 2017 – Mark your calendars

I wanted to make sure that everyone knows about a great upcoming charity event that is going to be held at one of the local Gyms in Dewitt. Two of my favorite groups: Fire fighters and Law Enforcement going head to head to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Association

Resident Lecture!

Posted: 3rd August 2017 by Dr D in Uncategorized

Ahhhh, I love the smell of scared residents at 0800 in the morning!

This morning, we’re gonna be torturing the MSU EM residents with some Dery-esk slides and Edu-ma-cation…that is fancy lingo for lots of powerpoint slides, gross pictures, and REALLY bad sense of humor.

Seriously though, we’ll be talking about Heroic procedures that are done in the ED that every EM physician should know and the 2017 Visual Odyssey of visual stimuli (things that you should recognize right away)

Hey everyone, looking for some CE’s specific for Capnography?

Check out the class being held at Delta FD on July 26th and 27th on capnography for tube placement and verification. click on this link for the flier:

It’s that time everyone!  It’s going to be a very busy day so come prepared to work hard and learn from the best. You’ll never get another chance to do this during your EM residency

just read a great article from Emergency Physicians Monthly newsletter about when HIPPA does NOT apply to a situation. I agree that we are too anxious about releasing information about our patients, especially to our other facilities or related service lines.

For example, when medics bring in a cardiac patient and later return and want to know how the guy did (did he go to the lab? where the trop’s positive, etc) What can you tell these guys?

I highly suggest you read the rest of the article as well: 10 Times HIPPA May Not Apply available at Emergency Physicians Monthly website

Delhi FD Airway Lecture

Posted: 17th March 2017 by Dr D in Airway, CME, FireFighters, Lectures, Paramedics

Hello everyone:

this last weekend I was lucky enough to teach airway skills for an hour at the Delhi Fire Department CE Blitz (Thanks again to Lt Brett Justice for inviting me back again!)

we did a great pig heart/lung dissection as well as practice emergency crich’s on the pig tracheas.

A few people had questions about how pediatric airways are different then the adult version. Please see the image below:

Keep in mind that when intubating a child, the most narrow part of the airway is BELOW the cords. Even more reason to make sure that you confirm the placement of that tube!

Other then that, getting ready for EMS Week in May; everyone be safe at work and thank you for all that you do

Last month we had some articles about the heat and the humidity as well. This month we are going to focus a bit more on conducted energy weapons (aka Tazers – but it is a brand name so I’m trying to be generic)

These have been in the news recently in conjunction with individuals that have been taken into custody and had a bad outcome while being restrained as well. As medics, we need to be familiar with the devices and the way that they operate and the potential complications that we might see if asked to assess a suspect who has been “taken for a ride”
This is another small chunk of the topics for the certification examination.
My long term goal is to have all the TEMS Medics on all the above teams certified as Tactical Paramedics by the BCCTPC (Board for Critical Care Transport Paramedic Certification) within the next 12 months. You can learn more about this at this site: https://www.ibscertifications.org/roles/tactical-paramedic
Everyone have a good month, stay safe.
